Fire Door Safety Week

The scheme aims to raise awareness of the critical role that fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property by delaying the passage of fire and smoke.

Fire doors have such an important role to play in any building but are only effective if they are installed and maintained correctly. Below are just some of the checks that you can do to ensure your fire doors are in tip top condition…

Certification – Check for a label, usually on the top edge of the door, which will show the door’s certification. Check your ironmongery too, which should be CE marked and, in most cases, be marked with the item’s fire test certification.

Gaps – Check the gaps around the top and sides of the door are consistently less than 4mm when the door is closed

Seals- Ensure that intumescent seals are fitted and that they are not damaged. If they are, they can easily be replaced at little cost. You will just need to check the width of the seal, confirm its colour and whether it contains a smoke seal. We stock all colours and sizes.

Hinges – Check that fire-rated hinges are fitted firmly in the door and that there are no missing or broken screws. Hinges should have intumescent sheet behind them.

Door Closers– If fire doors are not locked shut, and identified as such with the correct signage, then they will require a door closer. Door closers should close the door completely and can usually be adjusted to ensure this happens. If you have any concerns with your door closers, then please get in touch.
